Last week at a scale up strategic offsite, I asked our COO (Matt) if he felt his teammates would rehire him? His answer was what I would have expected from a true leader who lives by our values.
“I will ask them, and I’ll seek to truly understand their perspective. If there’s anything they say I can improve on, I will get clear on how I need to fix it. The last thing I want is to be the cause of holding them back from achieving significance.”
He showed his passion toward living one of our company values: The day we stop learning we cease to exist. The results he has been able to deliver since he started this position clearly reflect this mentality.
If you consider each of your own positions within this team, what would your answer be to the following question;
If my teammates were tasked with the role of hiring my position, would they hire me back? If yes, why? If no, why?
Take 60 seconds and reflect on this. Write down the 1 key takeaway that came to mind.
Many answers will be “I don’t know,” and the root cause of this is that many think they work for their boss. They make decisions, take actions and adopt certain attitudes to make their boss happy. However, this paradigm (created in the 60’s by the industrial age) is 100% inaccurate. Why? Because our boss works for us. That boss’s role is to support the team and remove roadblocks to their success–people, processes, resources, systems, whatever those blocks might be. Our job is to ensure that boss knows what those problems are and work with the team to solve/resolve them. Another one of our company values.
Leadership is not a position but an action, one that consistently seeks the skills and knowledge necessary to hold others accountable and support their successes. And the result of leadership is a strong sense of personal meaning.
As human beings, our meaning is created by providing this support for each other. In some form or fashion, the motivation and excitement in our lives is directly attributed to the impact we have on those around us– our families, our teammates, our customers, our trades. Would they all hire us today for our position?
Elliott Homes reason to exist is to Create a Place Where Life gets better. Why? Because the result fills our soul. It motivates us to get out of bed in the morning and strive for something bigger than ourselves. It creates natural energy, passion and happiness that drives meaningful change in the world and a higher quality of life for those we serve.
My question to any individual reading this, no matter what role you fill or team you play for, is;
How can you be a better leader today? Who can you lift up?
And the next;
Did you write down your answer above? Yes or No. The willingness to take the time to improve is likely tied closely to your team members hiring you back or not.
Have a powerful week and don’t be scared to fail.
