Consider this VERY unique hypothetical scenario:
We have a new hiring process run by our customers. They interview new candidates with the goal of only adding new team members who truly add value to the customers’ lives.
Now, ask yourself these questions:
1. If I had to be re-interviewed for my job, would our customers hire me back?
2. If my manager would have to interview for their job, would our customers hire my manager back?
3. If our leadership team had to interview for their jobs, would our customers hire our leadership team back?
4. If our CEO had to interview for his job, would our customers hire him back?
If the answer to any one of these questions is “no,” – our purpose as a company is being watered down and your team needs you.
The difference between high-performing and low-performing teams is the team’s ability to give frank feedback. This feedback aims to create value for the customer – value that reaches far greater heights than the sum of what the individuals can contribute.
As a high-performing team, TRUST is what drives us to create real change. Trust means that if anyone were to answer “no” to one of the four questions above, they would confront the person who they felt wasn’t creating value. Trust also means that the person being confronted sees this feedback as a sign of great respect and not as a personal attack. Usually the feedback that cuts the deepest is the feedback that helps us grow the most. High performers will embrace this.
Leadership today is not a position but a requirement. Leaders do not try to act as industry experts but instead as industry shapers. While experts focus on past processes, shapers focus on future value. The key to leadership is not what you know and do but instead what you help others know and do.
So do what may be the most difficult thing you’ve ever done and do it for the sake of your team. Help that person (starting with me) grow and thrive to ensure our team delivers on our calling. Your feedback is our future.
The Day we Stop Learning We Cease To Exist.
Have a great week team!
