I am lucky and grateful that people randomly send me quotes and books to read often as new knowledge makes us think hard about our direction and meaning. Last week, Kenneth sent me a great one that I have been thinking of constantly and wanted to share with you.
“One of the most robust predictors of life satisfaction is helping others. William Arthur Ward captures this theme well when he said: The adventure of life is to learn. The purpose of life is to grow. The nature of life is to change. The challenge of life is to overcome. The essence of life is to care. The opportunity of life is to serve. The secret of life is to dare. The spice of life is to befriend. The beauty of life is to give.”
As I related this back to our innovation wall and matched each item to a quote on our wall, I realized it all pointed at one recurring trend that most are uncomfortable with………. Change. It is interesting how so many people stay away from change when it is simply the direct path to a meaningful existence. It is easy to understand why they do, however, as change creates unknowns and the possibility that we might fail. Because we are taught in school that failure is bad, this creates negative energy within our brains to defend our position or our present philosophies. Right now, we are doing some MAJOR innovative stuff behind the scenes that will roll out during the course of the next 2 to 18 months. These changes are HUGE disruptors within home building and have started getting attention from groups around the industry. Building a customer journey that others cannot attain with traditional building practices is our blue ocean strategy that will put us lightyears ahead of our competitors. It not only creates raving customers, but it also makes our jobs much easier as we deliver something well above the expectations of our buyers and the residents within our market to truly make an impact on quality of life.
As we continue to refine the master plan for this new innovative spin to home building, there are two clear items that ALL the objectives align to.
- YOUR insight for root cause issues
Often times in situations you might notice how others complain about their environment but do nothing to actually change it. It’s like they are victims of actions that others have taken and stating why it was wrong is the solution to it. Knowing that learning, growing, changing, overcoming, caring, serving, daring, befriending and giving is the heartbeat to a meaningful life, it is hard to understand why someone might do this as a solution toward improving it. It seems it is due to fear of failure. If we go out on a limb, we have never been on then we aren’t clearly sure of the outcome. To keep away from unknowns we instead just choose to not go on it. Why? Because as an individual this is a scary proposition as we can only see up to our experiences in the past. However, with a team… Now that is much different.
With a team our ability to see past our limits is determined by the level of trust we have with others on it. It’s determined by how open we are to giving and receiving feedback, knowing the goal of accomplishment comes from the leverage we all have on each other. That, as a team the outcome is greater than the sum of us as individuals. Also, that we as individuals will benefit more when we are all learning, growing, changing, overcoming, caring, serving, daring, befriending and giving together. As a team the fear of failure disappears and we all of a sudden have support to achieve more meaning as an individual.
If we consider that, literally, the only thing in this entire world that we can control is our thoughts, then clearly, change starts with us. Before we can do any of these meaningful things that reflect a colorful impactful lifestyle it is imperative, we must look at change from an inside out perspective, instead of an outside-in. We must look at every situation while asking ourselves: Is there a better way I could have done this, then putting ourselves below the advice of others?
This paradigm shift in thinking allows our internal beliefs to dissipate and removes any ceiling for growth both individually and as a team. This not only leverages each other to create something truly unique but also grows the people within it exponentially faster.
So on this outstanding week, don’t waste 1 minute of your day stuck on the status quo while working to just not fail. Like the incredible feedback given from the company survey last week or the PPI’s through the phase teams, keep being an advocate for change. Lean on and leverage your teammates to create meaning and most importantly: Learn, grow, change, overcome, care, serve, dare, befriend and give, as it is the lifeblood to changing the world.
The exciting part: We are only getting started.
